Excess Knowledge proved to be a standout for Waterhouse through the 2015 edition of the Spring Carnival, and the now six-year-old following up an impressive victory in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2600m) a credible seventh in the featured Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) most notably.

Confirming that the son of Monsun will again be set for the Melbourne Cup this season, Waterhouse told Racing Ahead that the horse will line up for the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes in excellent condition, and she expects he will be right in the finish of the race.

“He’ll run terrific,” Waterhouse said.

“He just looks absolutely fabulous, he’s carrying what you’d expect on weight-for-age and he’s got that maturity about him that he didn’t have last year.

Stephen Baster rode him for me yesterday and he said he could not believe how his action and mental attitude has improved. He’s really the real deal and we’ll have a lot of fun with him this preparation.”

Excess Knowledge has been a strong and consistent performer throughout his entire racing career so far; posting a commendable four wins and five minors through only fifteen starts since making his debut in the autumn of 2014.

Resuming last spring for fifth in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m), Excess Knowledge was luckless in running in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) before finishing seventh, but responded with a smart performance for second in the Listed Harry White Classic (2400m).

Again finishing second in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) in what one his only other start prior to the Lexus Stakes, Excess Knowledge resumed this year for second in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) but was returned to the paddock after failing to fire and tenth in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on the Gold Coast on May 7th.

Excess Knowledge will leave from the ideal barrier 4 this afternoon, and is currently available at 2016 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes odds of $21 with online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
