The Cleaner has been a favourite of Australian racing since he saluted for Tasmanian-based trainer Mick Burles in the 2014 edition of the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes, and has continued to produce a typically-gutsy performances through several subsequent and impressive campaigns.

Having been transferred to the care of Gelagotis at the conclusion of his 2015 campaign, the Moe-based trainer saddled The Cleaner to a comfortable and impressive six-length win in a Cranbourne trial on Monday and is pleased with his condition leading into the spring.

“The horse trialled really well and he’s pretty much on target – he went great,” Gelagotis told Racenet.

“The pleasing aspect coming out of the trial was his action was really good and Stevie (Arnold) gave a glowing report on what he felt. He was very happy.

“We used the opportunity to travel the horse away (from Moe) and use those chances to give him his serious hit-outs with smaller gallops in between and putting a lot more emphasis on the trials.

“He’s getting really switched on. He’s a racehorse we all know that and the trials have done him the world of good.”

The Cleaner has been a standout performer throughout his entire racing career so-far; posting nineteen wins and a further sixteen minors through a total of fifty-four starts for close to $1.5 million in prize money.

Progressing to success in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) following his 2014 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes triumph, The Cleaner failed to figure in the late stages of the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) but responded with a strong performance for third in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) most notably.

Resuming last spring for a close second in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m), the Savoire Vivre gelding returned to winning form in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes before running third in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and a brave seventh in the Cox Plate.

The 2016 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes is slated to run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday, September 3rd.
