The Cleaner booked ballot-free entry into the 2014 Cox Plate with success in last year’s edition of the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and trainer Mick Burles has revealed the popular gelding will return to defend his crown in 2015.
Undoubtedly Tasmania’s best current horse in work, The Cleaner has been a strong and consistent performer for Burles since first appearing on course in 2011; posting eighteen wins and a further fourteen minors through a total of 49 starts.
Revealing a 1500m race at Moonee Valley a fortnight earlier will figure as his first competitive point of call this time, Burles told Racing Victoria The Cleaner has been back in work for the better part of two months and he is pleased with the continually building condition of the rising eight-year-old.
“He’s about four weeks off racing. He’ll run over 1500 at Moonee Valley on the 22ndof August,” Burles said.
“Moonee Valley seems to suit him.
“He’ll have a trial at Hobart before that. He’s just doing a bit of pacework at the moment, so we’ll step his gallops up a bit before that.
“He’s definitely benefitted from the break. He’s eaten a lot better and he’s muscled up nice and strong.
“I want to have a go at the Cox Plate pretty fresh with him this year. The experience last year will do him the world of good…it’ll do me good too.”
Returning to racing in typically competitive form in 2014, The Cleaner returned to the paddock following an early autumn campaign highlighted by success in the Listed George Adams Plate (1600m) in February.
Running second in the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m) on July 14th, the son of Savoire Vivre bookended his Dato Tan Chin Name triumph will success in each of the Jeep Don’t Hold Back Handicap (1600m) and Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) before placing a credible ninth in Cox Plate and third in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).
Returning in good condition once again during the 2015 autumn, The Cleaner placed second in the George Adams Plate before arguably posting his most impressive result to date when finishing fourth in the major Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 14th.
