The Cleaner wins 2014 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes

September 6th, 2014

Resounding punters’ pick The Cleaner has produced an exceptional run at Moonee Valley Racecourse this afternoon, leading from start to finish to win the featured Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) by more than a length.

Jumping from the gates well, the Savoire Vivre gelding immediately charged towards the lead, setting a noticeably quick tempo over the back straight ahead of leading chance Star Rolling and Crackerjack King.

Finding the final straight with a clear racing line, The Cleaner continued to open the gap to his nearest rivals, producing an exceptional final straight sprint to finish in the clear of Mourinho and Foreteller.

Trainer Mick Burles was understandably thrilled with The Cleaner’s performance in the 2014 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes, confirming he will accept the ballot-free entry into the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in October that is offered to the Dato winner.

“He’s a bloody champion, isn’t he?”

“It was a test, a test to see if he could measure up to the others – well I think he did.

“That’s all I was aiming for,” Burles said of the Cox Plate ballot-free entry.

“We’ve had our ups and downs, but I’m happy with what he’s done. You’ve got to keep the weight, got to keep his strength up – if you work him too hard he’ll just fall away to a shadow.”

Jockey Stephen Arnold delivered an exceptional ride on The Cleaner in the 2014 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes and was quick to lay all the praise on his talented partner.

“He sort of really captures the imagination of the racing people and probably the public a bit as well – it’s just his really tough, front-running style,” Arnold said.

“He actually went pretty smooth through the first couple of furlongs and he was in a pretty relaxed state down the back straight, and when we turned down the side I gave him a crack with the whip and it really turned him on and off he went with a really relentless gallop.

“I was wrapped to have the ride on him and really thrilled for everyone that he could get the job done today.”
