A particularly talented field of 17 runners have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s featured Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse, highlighted by several previous champions at the highest level of Australian racing.
Currently registering as favourite for the 2014 Melbourne Cup after a superb autumn preparation, trainer Gai Waterhouse has nominated The Offer for a racing return in this weekend’s Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes.
Securing a commendable total of six wins and five minor places from just seventeen competitive starts so far, The Offer began his racing tenure under the guidance of leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien before transferring to the care of Waterhouse at the conclusion of 2012.
Returning to racing this year for a less-than convincing sixth in the Australian Turf Club 3.y.o+ (1400m) on March 1st, the Montjeu gelding finishing third in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) a fortnight later before securing three impressive victories back-to-back; taking out each of the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m), Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) most recently on April 19th.
Also included in nominations for the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes is impressive last-start winner Star Rolling.
A notable performer in his maiden preparation through the 2013 Spring Carnival, Star Rolling won four of seven starts, but was unlucky to miss the cut in several of his season’s major targets.
Continuing to produce consistent results over the 2014 autumn, the Casino Prince gelding finished second in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) and third behind 2013 Melbourne Cup champion Fiorente in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) most notably; returning to the paddock after failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 8th.
Displaying a keen turn of foot to win the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 16th, trainer Peter Morgan is confident Star Rolling has returned to racing in career-best form this time in, and is expecting another polished performance in the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes.
Trainer Chris Waller is poised to dominate the final field for the 2014 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes, nominating four of his stable’s stars, each having secured at least one victory at Group 1 level.
Unable to reach peak condition over five starts through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Foreteller hit exceptional form for Waller over the 2013 spring; charging home to win the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and finishing a credible fourth in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) most notably on October 26th.
Unable to quite reach full potential through the 2013 spring despite winning the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes, Hawkspur finished third in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and just outside the places in both the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and has steadily built to the task over two black type starts this time in.
Returning to racing for second in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on August 23rd, Royal Descent won the 2013 edition of the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) and failed to finish worse than fifth over four headline races through the 2014 autumn.
Unlucky to finish fourth in both the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at the beginning of his autumn prep, Sacred Falls charged home to successfully defend his 2013 victory in the Doncaster Mile before finishing second to It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships.
A final field of 15 plus barrier draw for the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
