The 2011 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes race date is scheduled as Saturday September 10, making this exciting weight-for-age mile feature the first Group race of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival conducted at Moonee Valley.
Also at this opening Moonee Valley spring meet punters at Luxbet can enjoy a bet on the Group 2 WH Stocks Stakes (1600m) for mares and the Group 3 McEwen Stakes (1000m).
But it is the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes 2011, registered as the John F Feehan Stakes, that takes centre stage.
Contested over the Moonee Valley mile (1600 metres), the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes prize money is $400,000 in total and the showdown provides some great racing action in Melbourne while the coveted 2011 Golden Rose takes place on the same day at Rosehill in Sydney.
Not only is the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes the first Group race conducted at Moonee Valley during the Melbourne Spring Racing Festival, it is also an excellent lead-up race for horses heading towards the more lucrative features of the season.
Due to its middle-distance, the race is the perfect preparatory run for gallopers vying for Group 1 glory in upcoming spring showdowns including the $350,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 17, the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8 and even the prestigious $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
The 2011 Cox Plate will run at Moonee Valley on October 22.
Last year’s Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner was Mark Kavanagh’s weight-for-age star Whobegotyou who also won the 2009 edition of the race.
Both years Whobegotyou came into the race via a second place finish in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
Punters looking for a guide to the Dato’ are advised to keep an eye on the 2011 Memsie Stakes result at Caulfield on August 27.
Whobegotyou went on to run third to dual winner So You Think in the 2010 Cox Plate and last year’s Cox Plate Quinella are the early favourites in the 2011 Cox Plate odds at Luxbet.
Nominations for the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes will be taken by Racing Victoria on September 5.
The 2011 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes final field of acceptors and barrier draw is then released on September 7, which is also when Luxbet will open their Moonee Valley betting odds on the race.
Don’t wait until then to get in on the spring racing and betting action.
