The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes was inaugurated onto the Australian horse racing calendar in 1948, with Phoibos claiming the initial hours. Originally a Principal race, it became elevated to Group Two in 1979 – and has remained as such since. For the majority of its history the race was known as the John F Feehan Stakes, but since 2005 was named after the Malaysian entrepreneur and racehorse owner Dato Tan Chin Nam.
